Company Section Display Report 2007

Adapted from Company Section Display Report - Friday 25th May 2007

Firstly, I would like to thank all those who attended, and I hope you had an enjoyable evening. After the opening service, our chief guest Rev. McQuarrie carried out a thorough inspection of the Boys, later making comments on how well turned out they all were.

We were then treated to the first of our Drill items, where the 'B' Squad (who finished second in the district) were put through their paces by Staff Sergeant Andrew Hart. Many of the Boys have only been doing drill for a couple of years, so the standard to which they are marching is highly commendable. The Drill was followed by a few brief comedy sketches by some of the intermediate Boys.

After a couple of games, the audience were treated to the premiere of the 79th Drum Core. This is the first time in many years that a Drum Core has performed in a 79th Display, and we are thrilled that it is making a comeback. We were then treated to the Seniors' sketch (based on the TV quiz 'Catchphrase'). I'm afraid to say that newly promoted Staff Sergeant Gary Matheson is certainly no Roy Walker sound-a-like, however this did not detract from what was a very entertaining item.

The vaulting squad were next on showing off an array of simple and complicated moves using trampettes and both short and high boxes. Following this was the shorter-than-usual Captain's Report, and then the main Drill squad rounded off the individual display items for the night.

Rev. McQuarrie was then invited up to the stage to assist in the prize giving ceremony during which our 3 senior boys were officially discharged from the section. As was mentioned on the night, we are delighted that two of them - Ian Lamb and Gary Matheson - are able to come back next year as members of the Junior Section staff. To the third of them, Christopher Baird, the Company wishes him all the best for his studies at St. Andrews University.

Rev. Kerr of Newton Mearns Parish Church then completed the Closing Service by leading an official hand-over of the Company Captaincy. I would like to express my own gratitude to Eric Rushworth for his service as Company Captain during my time as OIC of the Company Section and the work that he has done to lead the 79th through a very successful time. Robbie Sutherland was then asked to dismiss the Company as the new Captain.

Once again, I would like to thank all the parents for supporting the Company, and also to the Parents & Friends Committee for their sterling work throughout the session.

See you all in the new session.

Alastair Gilston
Officer-in-Charge
